Red Roost and Red Rest Bungalows
Continuing as SOHO's longest-running preservation battle while enduring more than a quarter century of shameful, deliberate neglect, and despite a fire in October 2020, the Red Roost and Red Rest may rise again. While this devastating fire left Red Rest as charred rubble and damaged the Red Roost, the new owners are working with City of San Diego staff to stabilize and preserve what remains. The owners recently submitted preliminary plans for rehabilitation, reconstruction, and relocation on site, according to the La Jolla Light. If the project goes forward with plans and permits for a historical resource and coastal development, then SOHO, planning groups, and others will weigh in before final approval. With these early remnants of La Jolla's seaside art community high on their radar, the City's Historical Resources Board staff has confirmed the 1894 property is braced and secured for now.
