Kensington Pepper Trees
The Kensington community, the Kensington-Talmadge Planning Group, and SOHO continue to advocate to protect and save the historical c. 1910 Kensington pepper trees lining many of the scenic neighborhood's streets. In 2017, residents submitted a City of San Diego "Conserve-a-Tree" application for all (then) 37 trees, but trees continue to be leveled while the City stalls on legal proceedings. City workers and crews have shown up in early morning hours and chopped healthy trees into stumps before anyone could stop them. While Kensington residents have remained vigilant with on-site protection and protests, these unfortunate losses continue without workers following proper, City-mandated protocol. Citizens have been shut out of meetings and their concerns continuously overlooked. The two legal challenges regarding the removal of two specific pepper trees without following the municipal code process remain active, but stalled. (Scroll to view more photos) |
