Spreckels Warehouse
Built in 1924, the Spreckels warehouse is one of the few surviving, vernacular industrial buildings at J Street's west end. Its innovative structure of board-formed concrete walls and a lightweight, steel-truss roof makes it all the more important to keep. Designed without need of interior columns, the warehouse has an open, flexible interior, a floor plan that lends itself to all kinds of uses. It has been a Cost Plus store for years, but it may be in danger of demolition for at least two reasons. The City Council illegally overturned its historic designation. And, not coincidentally, economic pressure remains strong for a new, residential high-rise in this area.
