Overturning Historic Designations Trend
The historic designation process itself is at risk. SOHO is monitoring a disturbing trend that puts all of our historic resources at risk. Historic designations are being overturned by unlawful appeals to city councils with the city decision makers' acting in disregard, sheer ignorance, or willful misunderstanding of the arduous designation process and preservation ordinance. This has happened most egregiously in Coronado, where one significant home was demolished and another of its grandest Spanish Revival masterworks was cleared for demolition or remodeling, among others. In San Diego, false testimony and lobbying has resulted in the city council ruling against its own legal best interest. SOHO is currently pursuing legal action against the City of San Diego alleging illegal pattern of practice. This seems an opportune moment to remind people to help, if you can, build our legal fund.
