Adding to the significance of the endangered California Theatre is the iconic 1960s Caliente Racetrack Mural on its back wall, which was nearly painted over with a beer advertisement recently when its individual significance in the history of the San Diego and Tijuana Region failed to be considered. The near loss of the Caliente sign brought forth a new generation of preservationists and a new demographic: the avant-garde artist community. Now the sign will be considered for designation in its own right and this added layer of historicity may help to save the remarkable historic theatre.
