Rural Cultural Landscape of Northern San Diego County
Begining in Imperial County, San Diego Gas & Electric's planned 1.3 billion dollar Sunrise Powerlink will cross Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and move westward across North County to terminate a few miles from the coast. Critics say that the massive, imposing structure will do little to help the region meet California's renewable energy requirements or to improve reliability, and that Sunrise is largely unnecessary; up to 300 megawatts of renewable power from the Imperial Valley probably could be imported over existing power lines without the new powerlink! If allowed to proceed, the line will ruin the cultural landscape of one of the most pristine rural sections of the county, and it will affect many historical and archaeological resources.
In the Santa Isabel Valley, the proposed powerlink route is within direct view of the Santa Isabel Mission and crosses the Southern Emigrant Trail - the overland route taken by early immigrants on horseback and in wagons to San Diego. The powerlink will affect many other untouched scenic and historic areas, including Warner's Springs - one of the most important historical ranches in Southern California.
