Save Our Heritage Organisation

January 23
9am-4pm

In 1994 after the big floods that had been one of the longest periods of consecutive days of rain on record in San Diego County, SOHO volunteers began the months-long restoration of the 1830s adobe the Saint Francis Chapel in Warner Springs and the Rancho Santa Margarita Chapel on Camp Pendelton, where Marines were taught the age-old techniques of making adobe bricks.

Then in 2006 Save Our Heritage Organisation, (SOHO) began to hold classes in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park to teach the public the lost arts of adobe repair and restoration. In an effort to create a volunteer team of skilled adobe craftsmen, the classes were taught for several weekends to restore the 1827 Casa de Estudillo hacienda adobe, a State Park museum.

The most recent installment of Adobe U was last April, when over 40 volunteers made the trek out to Vallecito Stage Station, which is in a county park on the edge of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. At that time almost the entire structure was given a sacrificial coat of adobe mud and now it's time to do the same for the interior.

What is Adobe U?  A hands-on workshop where volunteers learn about historical and architectural background, technical and practical application, and about the archaeology of early California buildings.

Purpose  The long-term goal of Adobe U is to develop a trained team that can be called into action when historic adobe structures throughout the San Diego region are in need, a core group of volunteers that can help to protect and preserve these rare sites when the financial and labor resources needed are not available. Structures made of adobe, sod, and rammed earth are all earthen buildings, the purpose of Adobe University is to teach people how to properly care for them. Volunteers leave with an appreciation for the construction techniques needed in maintenance of such buildings.
