Historic Electric Laundry Company Building
Here is another great example of preservation and redevelopment done the right way. Centex Homes contacted SOHO when they were considering purchasing this property to see if we had any concerns with the buildings on it. We had
identified this building many years ago as one of the best existing buildings left from the old warehouse area of East Village. Centex had also been impressed with the good bones of this structure and committed to explore options to save it. They then took SOHO with them to CCDC to discuss the project.
CCDC supported the project and made the necessary accommodations to allow this project to become a reality, while still meeting the goals for park land, housing and related issues. The Electric Laundry Company building has now been designated a City of San Diego historic resource with the cooperation of Centex and CCDC. We are looking forward to the completion of this great project with the Electric Laundry Building being the centerpiece of the Laundry Lofts Project and the new warehouse district being proposed by SOHO. We are continuing to promote this kind of cooperation with developers and public entities. As you have seen this course of action is obtaining outstanding results. This is another excellent example of a project that all involved agree is infinitely better because of this cooperation. This collaboration ensures that San Diegoās historic legacy will be an exciting and vibrant part of our future. SOHO is proud to support the Laundry Lofts project, a project that will truly help San Diego maintain itās own unique sense of place as we grow.
