SS Catalina (1924)
This California Landmark is on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as the Last Great White Steamer on the Pacific Coast. Built for one million dollars in 1924 by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, the steamer elegantly carried people to and from the mainland to Wrigleyâs Santa Catalina Island. From her maiden voyage in 1924 until her retirement in 1975, the 301-foot long vessel ferried over 2.4 million people. During WWII, she was used to transport over 3/4 of a million troops, more than any other transport during the war. Abandoned by her owners and seized by the Mexican government, she now stands in the way of a multi million dollar cruise ship terminal. Partially submerged and listing 15 degrees to her port side in the Ensenada harbor, she faces dismantling.
