Whaley House Garden Update
By Jessica McGee
The Whaley House Garden Restoration Committee's work continues to be an interesting project. Old maps and site plans of the Whaley House property have been found and accounts of Southern California horticultural history have been reviewed and have helped shape the direction of the garden design.
Based on our research, as well as present-day considerations for the space, the committee has developed the following criteria. This encompasses existing garden material, moving, removing and adding new plants and hardscape. Three Certified Arborists evaluated the trees on the property and made health-improvement recommendations.
We are now in the design phase of the project and have been having lively discussions on the best ways to decorate the many "rooms" in these gardens. Once the design plans are agreed upon, we will plan the implementation and set maintenance standards.
After this committee's initial work is completed, there will be an ongoing Whaley House Garden Committee that will oversee the space, plan changes as needed and actually dig around in the dirt, helping with weeding, deadheading, transplanting, etc. SOHO members interested in this hands-on committee should look for future announcements in Reflections, or give us a call to be notified.
