Yucca elephantipes
GIANT YUCCA
Asparagaceae family
Southeast Mexico/Central America
Native to arid regions of Southeast Mexico and Central America, Yucca elephantipes can reach heights of 40 feet. They are "spineless" yucca, meaning the leaves have softer ends and are popular as house plants. Outdoors they can acclimate well to drought conditions, or to moist conditions. In summer, they produce large erect inflorescence that show off large stalks of cream colored flowers, which are edible. Yucca elephantipes receives its epithet from the form that mature trees take on at their base; they look like elephant's feet. Presidio Park has several giant yucca, but the specimen to the south of the Serra Museum likely dates from the original plantings of Percy Broell of the late 1920s.
