Phoenix reclinata
SENEGAL DATE PALM
Arecaceae family
Tropical Africa/Senegal
Native to tropical and subtropical Africa, Phoenix reclinata is a clumping plant with multiple stems or trunks, which can reach heights of 45 feet. In Latin "reclinata" refers to this palm's habit of leaning to the side or reclining. Producing an edible fruit, the Senegal date palm is used in its native environment for dietary purposes, but the tree also is used for practical purposes such as brooms, fencing, and for palm wine. These are beautiful palms that were planted in Presidio Park by Percy Broell the late 1920s under the direction of George Marston and were also noted by Chauncy Jerabek in his 1969 Presidio Park Plant Identification.
