This evergreen shrub to small tree produces small star-like flowers in midsummer and has a long-documented history in European literature. A native to northern Mediterranean Islands and the southern European mainland Myrtus communis references can be found in Greek and Roman mythology as well as in Jewish mysticism writings. The common myrtle has been used as hedges in England as least since the late 16th century. It also has culinary and medical uses. Myrtus communis is one of the original plants listed by Percy Broell in his 1937 plant identification.
