Melaleuca leucadendron
PAPERBARK TREE
Myrtaceae family
NW Australia
A large tree native to northwest Australia, the Aboriginal peoples are known to have used its timber for canoe construction. It has a thick spongy type bark that is easily pulled off in sheets, thus the common name paper bark tree. Melaleuca leucadendron is a medium to large tree that is today common in cultivation growing well in Mediterranean and subtropical climates and is documented to be one of the original plantings by Presidio Park Superintendent Percy Broell in 1937.
