Eucalyptus cladocalyx
SUGAR GUM
Myrtaceae family
Central S Australia (coastal)
Rising to heights of more than 100 feet Eucalyptus cladocalyx' white creamy summer flowers leave behind barrel shaped seed pods. Its termite resistant wood is used for, among other things furniture, paneling, and flooring. Today the sugar gum can be found worldwide in Mediterranean climates. Oddly, Eucalyptus cladocalyx is endemic to an extremely small geographic range. It is native to the Flinders Range, the Eyre Peninsula, and Kangaroo Island in Southern Australia, where its growing habit is very different than what can be seen in Presidio Park, and elsewhere in the world. There it grows smaller and less erect.
