Agave attenuata
FOXTAIL AGAVE
Asparagaceae family
Central Mexico, Jalisco
Although common in Southern California gardens today the Agave attenuata is unusual in the Agave family. It is an unarmed Agave native to a relatively small area in the Mexican state of Jalisco—growing on a plateau at altitudes of between 6,000-8,000 feet. Also unusual is it curved stem or inflorescence. The first known written documentation of Agave attenuata was by explorer Galeotti in 1834. Today it has naturalized in Mediterranean climates worldwide.
