Acacia melanoxylon
BLACK ACACIA
Fabaceae family
ESE Australia (coastal)
Although being considered an invasive species and noxious weed throughout the world where it had been introduced and naturalized, in its native habitat of Eastern and South-Eastern Australia it has multiple beneficial uses. Its wood is strong and is used in boats, decorative furniture pieces, and musical instruments. In its native environment it is also an important host to butterfly species such as the tailed emperor (polyura sempronius); silky hairstreak (pseudalmenus chlorinda); imperial hairstreak (jalmenus evagoras evagoras); stencilled hairstreak (jalmenus ictinus) and large grass-yellow (eurema hecabe hecabe). The Acacia melanoxylon produces a beautiful seed and pod.
