Village of Metí and Bancroft Ranch House Tour
10am-12 noon
Bancroft Ranch House
9050 Memory Lane, Spring Valley, CA 91977
The San Diego Archaeological Center invites you to tour the site of the Kumeyaay village of Metí, later the center of Hubert Howe Bancroft's Helix Farms in Spring Valley. Visit one of the best kept secrets in San Diego, listed on both the National and California Registers and the oldest continuously utilized adobe in the east county. The tour will be hosted by the Spring Valley Historical Society and light refreshments will be available.
Dr. Tim Gross, Ph.D, an archaeologist and a Spring Valley native, will discuss the prehistory of the region with specific attention to the village itself. He served as site director for part of the field school conducted by San Diego State University in the early 1970s. This portion of the program will include a walking tour of the Ranch House grounds and the adjoining Bancroft County Park.
Robert Case, also an archaeologist and President of the Spring Valley Historical Society, will discuss the transformations that took place after the arrival of the Spanish in 1769. In addition to a guided tour of the Ranch House museum, the tour will include a visit to the armory, the Bancroft Rock House, centerpiece of the Bancroft County Park, and the spring that made human occupation possible.
After the tour, guests are invited to enjoy a picnic lunch. Information will be provided concerning nearby restaurants. The cost of the tour is $20 per person. All major credit cards are accepted. Please make checks payable to the San Diego Archaeological Center.
The Mission of The San Diego Archaeological Center is to preserve archaeological collections and promote their educational, scientific and cultural use to benefit a diverse public.
