Dear Friend of historic preservation and SOHO supporter,
On behalf of the board I wish you and yours a very happy holiday season!
Also, on behalf of myself and the board I'd like to thank you for your support, when in the midst of the frustrating, sad, and unbelievable events of the Balboa Park saga, you-the SOHO members and supporters-kept us strong. We want you to know how much you helped, through your emails, note cards, contributions to the legal expenses, and standing with us for hours at meetings and hearings. How knowing that you were counting on SOHO to save your beloved park kept us going and determined. The court case on this will be heard on the first of February. We will keep you informed closer to the date of how you can help at that time.
As dark and dismal as many of these days have been, the sheer joy of saving and restoring two of our region's most fragile and exceptional historic sites-the Warner-Carrillo Ranch House and Santa Ysabel General Store-remind us daily of why Historic Preservation is so important to all of us and how transformative it can be for the people directly involved, for the community it touches, and with the intrinsic value that a piece of our past preserved provides to all who see it or just pass by, comforted by the presence of that which has stood the test of time.
At this time of year when I ask for your donation, I want you to know that we do need and depend on it. We have a lot on our plate and even with our board and staff expertise and professional services, the cost of restoration is high. Just a few examples that illustrate our need, we must replicate the historic wood fence of the Warner-Carrillo Ranch and restore it's neighboring adobe the Kimball-Wilson trading post, we would very much like to begin the restoration of the historic canyon garden at the Marston House, and to rebuild the front porch at the Santa Ysabel store. Our wish lists are long, but absolutely necessary to put these sites in good repair and good standing for now and for generations to come.
Our legal costs still outstanding, perhaps you'd like to indicate your end-of-year gift go directly to the Balboa Park Legal Fund or other important historic building battle funds. However you choose to help and at whatever amount you are able to give, it's important that you know we will use it well and with careful thought to expenditure.
We'd like to be able to hire another preservation professional next year even, if at all possible too, to more effectively cover the many preservation issues that come up around the county.
So, in this season of giving we hope we have earned your trust with the work we do day to day and year after year and that we have a place on your list of favorite charities, and that either for the first time or once again you will include SOHO in your end-of-year contributions.
On behalf of our Board of Directors, all our staff and volunteers, I wish you the very best of the season and thank you for your enduring support.
Sincerely,
Bruce Coons
Executive Director
