In September, SOHO partnered with Andrés Pérez, a Chula Vista High Tech High humanities instructor, to bring 50 students on a guided tour of Old Town that also illustrated the importance of protecting and preserving San Diego's cultural heritage. We began with an overview of SOHO's purpose and how we advocate across San Diego County for our collective heritage. Then the students were led along a chronological tour focused on the founding of San Diego.

By explaining the beginning of California, and San Diego, in 1769, the establishment of the Presidio at the top of Presidio Hill, and 19th century development of the Old Town Plaza and San Diego Avenue, the students learned how these significant historical places fit within the city's history and today's built environment.

Stay tuned for an update, as final projects for this humanities class have the students choosing a historic resource and preparing an advocacy strategy. A special thank you to Allen Hazard, SOHO member and professor at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, who developed and helped provide this Old Town tour to the High Tech High students.
