SOHO's own Hoover Barn in Santa Ysabel was unanimously designated by the San Diego County Historical Sites Board on October 16, 2017. The circa 1895 barn makes a significant contribution to regional history through its close association with Santa Ysabel's early agricultural development and for embodying characteristics of a late 19th-century Dutch style barn, a rare architectural style and building type in San Diego County. Read the historical nomination.

With restoration complete, the next step was to ensure the redwood barn's long-term preservation through historic designation. In 2016, SOHO President Jaye MacAskill and Historic Resources Specialist Amie Hayes began compiling the necessary research, photographs, and historical record to write the designation nomination. After visits to the Julian Historical Society, the County's History Office at 5500 Overland Avenue, and much online research, the nomination was submitted to the County last summer.

With our successful designation of the Hoover Barn, stay tuned for more about SOHO's next designation project: the Santa Ysabel Store!
