The only Victorian era cottage to remain within the historic heart of Del Mar, this c.1885 home was built by Jacob Shell Taylor, the founder of Del Mar, for $600 and still occupies its original site, 119 Tenth Street. Taylor developed the Casa Del Mar hotel and resort in addition to the city's first schoolhouse, train depot, and water systems. Taylor also built a number of single-family residences, including both the Dunham and Alvarado House (now located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds), whose original floor plans are identical. Purchased in 1927 by its namesake, Ed and Lovey Dunham, the Dunhams raised five children here—in less than 800 square feet!

Sold in 2019, the new owners will provide some relocation and restoration funds, but more is needed to ensure the longevity of this important early Del Mar cottage. With a looming October 2020 deadline and uncertainty during COVID-19, this resource remains high on SOHO's radar.
