Hats Off To Marston's!
September/October 2018
By Bobbie Bagel

Have you noticed that women's hats are back in style? Perhaps it's the influence of the British royal family, with all those fascinators on parade at weddings and other formal occasions. Hats of all shapes and sizes are being worn with enthusiasm these days. It is lovely to see this trend return, as it is reminiscent of a more genteel time, when stylish hats were ladies' fashion necessities.

As you may know, SOHO has been collecting items with the venerable Marston label for our new permanent exhibit, The Marston Legacy: Progress and Preservation, opening October 25. (Please see the separate article on the exhibit in this issue of eNews.). Browsing through bound volumes of old Marston Company advertisements, we noticed that hats were one of the most frequently featured merchandise categories. Sure enough, SOHO has received more donations of hats than any other item. Tucked away in a hat box in many a closet, these hats have been well preserved. Some have been shelved for over 50 years. And now they are ready to take another bow.

Please join us for "Hats Off to Marston's," on Sunday, September 23 at the Marston House Museum's south terrace, when we'll highlight these vintage hats and a captivating collection of new designs with you in mind. This event will provide pleasant entertainment and great shopping opportunities as well from 11am to 1pm.

First, you'll see a fashion show of some of the vintage hats SOHO has recently acquired. Our enthusiastic team of volunteer docents will model the hats narrated by Diana Cavagnaro, internationally renowned couture milliner.

Then we will present a trunk sale with contemporary hats and scarves coordinated by Lea Goldman, a veteran stylist and fashionista extraordinaire! She can help you find just the right hat. And Lea will share some great pointers on interesting ways to tie scarves for the best effect. This trunk show will be a great opportunity to enhance your own wardrobe and get a head start on your holiday gift list. So do come ready to shop!

And there's more. We'll serve plentiful, refreshing mimosas and delicious light refreshments. As a bonus gift, all guests will receive a complimentary mimosa glass bearing the Marston House logo as a memento of the day. In addition, a half-off coupon for a house tour will be available.

Seating is limited to 50, so make your reservations soon. Plan on enjoying a relaxing and entertaining two hours in the tranquil atmosphere of the finest historic home and gardens in San Diego.

Tickets are $30 and only available in advance. Purchase tickets HERE.

And remember, as a vintage Marston's advertisement said, With the right hat, nothing else matters!
