SOHO Lady 2015

The annual membership party also includes a 45-year-old tradition of the passing of the SOHO Lady. A table lamp of unique beauty, which is given each year in honor of volunteerism, from one volunteer to the next.

Last year's recipient, Dionné Carlson, was on hand to officially reward this year's volunteer to SOHO board member Elizabeth Weems. Dionné spoke eloquently about the many events that Liz has given her valuable time to, aside from her volunteer role as a director and especially this past year with the Art of the Park exposition centennial event. Liz has also created much of the original artwork used each year by SOHO for Old Towns Día de los Muertos celebration.

The SOHO Lady Award does come with some covenants, originated by Courtney and Denise Gonzales who first presented it in 1969, the year SOHO was founded, presumably a curbside find. That year's recipient was Peggy and Tom Shepley who added the stipulation to the award that it must always be on public display for the full year in the recipient's home and that SOHO members are apt to check at any time! Liz seemed happy to be honored and a part of such a long-standing tradition.
