Do your New Year's resolutions include doing more for preservation in the community? How about becoming a SOHO docent and giving tours of the Marston House Museum, one of California's finest remaining Arts & Crafts homes, or the Warner-Carrillo Ranch House, a primary stage coach stop on the western emigrant trail?

Being a docent is a great way to learn more about San Diego history; meet interesting people, including some with personal connections to these historic sites; and make a difference in the community. Docents also enjoy connecting with other SOHO members and the pleasure and prestige of enlightening visitors about these remarkable historic landmarks.

SOHO provides docent training, and the history you will be sharing is thoroughly researched. The minimum time commitment is one four-hour shift per month, although many docents volunteer for more than that.

  • At the 1905 Marston House in Balboa Park, guided tours run 45 minutes and cover significant information about the Marston family and their achievements, the architects Hebbard & Gill, and the Arts & Crafts movement. This warm, handsome home is authentically furnished with Arts & Crafts furniture, San Diego landscape paintings, art pottery, and American Indian baskets and rugs. We especially need volunteers to give tours on Mondays from 10am-2pm or from 1pm-5pm. Apply HERE
  • The Warner-Carrillo Ranch House Museum, near Warner Springs, may be the best-kept secret in San Diego's backcountry. Visitors are amazed at the history of the restored 1857 adobe house, built by Vicenta Carrillo, a prominent Californio woman rancher, and its crucial role in the opening of the West. Volunteers are needed for individual and group tours on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm. Docents may also help with special programs, such as the annual stagecoach ride, which offers participants the thrill of riding in a restored Concord Stage along part of the original route. If you're interested, we encourage you to take a tour, then apply HERE

Thank you for your interest in helping SOHO keep our heritage alive at these highly significant house museums.
