Qualcomm Stadium
San Diego Stadium, (the original name) is one of the few remaining mid-century designed multi-purpose stadiums left in the United States. It was opened in 1967 as home to the San Diego Chargers, the San Diego Padres and the San Diego State University Aztecs football team. Frank L. Hope Associates architect Gary Allen, who spent his formative years in the office of Philip Johnson, designed the stadium for the city. With its innovative design features which included pre-cast concrete, pre-wired light towers, and spiral concrete pedestrian ramps, the stadium received an American Institute of Architects Honor award in 1969 for outstanding design, the first time an architecture firm in San Diego had received a national honor award. The City of San Diego must find a way to preserve this modern monument.
