La Jolla Post Office

Threatened with closure by the Federal Government, the Depression Era La Jolla Post Office was built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and is a focal point of the village. The interior contains a stunning mural of La Jolla Cove painted in 1939 by muralist Belle Baranceanu, much of whose work has since been destroyed or has lost its historic context. To lose this building would be an unnecessary and senseless violation of La Jolla community life and fabric. Its charm and dignity anchor the La Jolla business district and are assets to the new National Main Street Business District and it is in imminent danger of being shuttered and sold to the highest bidder.
